Powerful New Book 'Asylum': Captures the Courage of LGBTQIA+ Asylum Seekers

Renowned photographer Umberto Nicoletti has released his latest book, titled "Asylum," which sheds light on the challenging experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals seeking asylum worldwide. Through striking portraits and accompanying testimonials, the book showcases the stories of these courageous individuals who have found refuge in more accepting countries, escaping persecution and potential harm. Nicoletti's collaboration with LGBTQIA+ asylum seeker organisations gives voice to these marginalised individuals, highlighting their resilience and hope.

The black and white photographs in "Asylum," skilfully capturing the subjects' hidden lives through strategic lighting and shadowing, symbolise the unknown chapters they have endured. The testimonials expose the immense violence and persecution they have faced, including life-threatening attacks, imprisonment, and torture. The book also highlights the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder among asylum seekers, emphasizing the need for systemic changes and increased support to address the backlog of cases.

Nicoletti's project draws attention to the alarming number of countries that criminalize queer identities, imposing severe penalties like imprisonment and even death for same-gender acts. It serves as a call to action, urging society to confront these injustices and spark meaningful conversations about the struggles faced by LGBTQIA+ asylum seekers worldwide. "Asylum" is a powerful reminder of the ongoing fight for LGBTQIA+ rights and the urgent need for global change, demanding attention, compassion, and action for those who continue to suffer.
