A transgender woman who escaped from Russia died by suicide in a refugee camp in the Netherlands

A 21-year-old transgender woman from Russia, Khina Zakharova, died by suicide in a Dutch refugee camp in late February 2023. She had fled from Russia due to anti-LGBTQIA+ discrimination and had applied for asylum in the Netherlands in December. Zakharova reportedly had difficulties accessing necessary medical care, including hormone therapy and antidepressants, while in the camp. Her death marks the second suicide by an LGBTQIA+ refugee in the Netherlands in the past six weeks. Zakharova's funeral was held on 06 March, and a memorial was placed for her at Homomonument in Amsterdam. LGBTQIA+ activists have spoken out about the discrimination that queer people face in Russia, which often affects their ability to adapt in European countries as well. The LGBT Asylum Support group expressed their condolences and shared a photograph of Zakharova, saying that they miss her and hope she can rest in peace.
